The day celebrating fathers did not become a national holiday in the United States until 1972, 58 years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother's Day official. Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father's Day a federal holiday in 1972, right in the heart of a hard-fought presidential re-election campaign.

Today, the third Sunday in June is observed as Father's Day in the United States. Fathers are celebrated in other nations, particularly in Europe and Latin America, on St. Joseph's Day, a traditional Catholic celebration that falls on March 19.
